First Responders

Standard

I am one of the first responders.
The first on the scene of the battered
and broken futures.
They lay there shattered
Hope and blood and life spilling out,
convulsing on the ground
Or slashing themselves to shreds
While well-meaning onlookers gawk.

I am one of the first responders.
The first to apply pressure to hemorrhaging possibilities,
(Everything Will Be All Right)
Just a splint, a brace, some fluids,
And I drive them away from the scene
Still in shock, twitching and talking nonsense.

I am one of the first responders,
And sometimes the last stop
for futures that have already slipped away.
Too late,
I am the first to respond too late.
To drive them away in body bags
Empty eyed, bullets on the pavement
Their deadweight pressing me on.
Next time, just a few minutes earlier.
If I could just arrive a few minutes sooner.
